A Brave One for it's first week
In the US Jodie Foster's vigilante flick "The Brave One" scared up $14 million at the box office to become the weekend's top film. The Warner Bros. tale of revenge transcended gender, appealing to older women as well as men who might naturally be expected to enjoy a violent film. "Revenge movies often appeal to men, but the fact that Jodie Foster was in it brought in the women," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "That combination worked." While the film's box office take was fairly modest, it is about right for this transition time of year between the summer blockbuster season and the fall Oscar push. The Brave One displaced last week's box-office winner, "3:10 to Yuma," which placed second with $9.2 million in ticket sales.

Valkyrie breaks down the wall in Berlin
After months of debate and controversy, Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," which stars Tom Cruise as would-be Hitler assassin Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, has been granted permission to shoot at a key historic site in Berlin according to The Hollywood Reporter. The German Defense Ministry on Friday overturned an earlier decision not to allow "Valkryie" to shoot at Bendlerblock building, the site where von Stauffenberg and his fellow conspirators plotted the assassination and where they were later executed by the Nazis. The German government had banned the production from shooting on site, saying that Bendlerblock, now a memorial to von Stauffenberg, was a building of important historic significance whose "dignity" could be damaged by a film shoot.
